Introduction to Skin needling
Skin needling isn’t as scary as it sounds and this simple procedure can literally transform your skin. Whether you have specific skin concerns or simply want a more radiant, even complexion, skin needling is an effective dermal treatment. As a leading skin clinic Melbourne, we’ve seen first hand the incredible results that can be achieved through regular skin needling – let’s take a look at what you can expect.
What is skin needling?
Skin needling works by stimulating elastin and collagen production in the skin and to address a number of conditions. The procedure involved passing fine, medical grade micro needles over the surface of your skin to create tiny puncture wounds. These ‘wounds’ generate a healing response and result in the formation of elastin and collagen. Depending on what you want to achieve, the micro needles vary from 0.05mm to 2.00mm in length.
Skin needling can be used in conjunction with other skin treatments, such as med-facials or laser skin treatment, or can be used as a standalone procedure.
What can skin needling be used for?
Skin needling can achieve amazing results for a number of specific conditions and the treatment can be used for:
- Acne scars
- Scars from surgery
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Nasio-labial lines
- Smoker’s lines
- Uneven skin texture
- Large pores
- Dull complexion
Skin needling isn’t just for the face – many people also opt for the treatment on their neck, hands and décolletage. Skin needling has the added bonus of helping your targeted skin care products penetrate more deeply for the weeks following treatment.
How many sessions do I need?
The number of skin needling sessions you’ll need will depend on what results you’re looking for and whether you have any specific conditions which need treating. Generally, four to six treatment sessions are recommended with four to eight weeks between each session to allow the skin to heal. Although you’ll see improvement immediately, it can take up to six months for you to see the full results.
What is the recovery like?
You’ll feel no discomfort during the procedure as topical anaesthetic cream will be used on the area which is being treated. Following treatment, you could have pinpoint bleeding where the micro needles have penetrated the skin and you’ll experience some mild redness and irritation for the 12 to 24 hours following your skin needling session. You may also experience some light flaking in the days following your treatment. Your dermal clinician will provide advice as to the best after-care routine to ensure your skin is well nourished.
