Your guide to anti-ageing: when to start and recommendations for every age

We all know prevention is better than cure- and when it comes to your skin this should be your main focus.

The basis of any good skincare routine is a holistic combination of things: from limiting stress, eating a balanced diet, ensuring you get adequate sleep and of course a cosmeceutical skincare regime with regular clinical treatments. While this basic formula will ensure your skin is radiant and healthy, ensuring you are nourishing your skin with the recommended ingredients for your age will help slow down your natural aging process.

Here are our tips for anti-aging products and treatments plus how to start…

In your early 20s

During your early 20s, your skin will still have a great amount of collagen and elastin, helping maintain that plump, youthful skin. However, this is the perfect age to start adding active ingredients and building good skincare habits!

As a general rule, vitamin C, B, E and hyaluronic are the types of ingredients that can be used at any age, to ensure your skin is nourished, protected and hydrated. Introducing antioxidants during this time is also beneficial as they help combat the effects of modern life, such as free radical damage.

However, the most essential product in your 20s (and at any age, for that matter) is SPF. More than 80% of facial aging is caused by the sun, so protecting your skin is the key to maintaining a youthful complexion. Applying a broad spectrum SPF 30-50+ every single day and actively re-applying every 90 minutes, in your 20s is likely to be the biggest savior in your 40s, 50s and 60s.

It’s also a great time to begin incorporating some basic clinical treatments. We recommend LED, Microdermabrasion or Enzyme Therapy to treat conditions such as uneven tone and texture, scarring, acne or inflammation.

Mid-late 20’s

During your mid-late 20s, you’re likely to start to notice changes in your skin. It’s now time to start adding some more targeted active ingredients such as Vitamin A (retinol). This is the ultimate anti-aging ingredient that promotes cell turnover and resurfaces skin to target fine lines and wrinkles. This ingredient acts as both a preventative and restorative ingredient, reducing wrinkles before they appear and targeting those that are already evident.

Ageing causes a loss of elasticity in the skin as collagen and elastin breakdown. Once these fibers have been damaged, it is harder to rebuild them. Daily use of active ingredients can help preserve and protect skin cells, slowing the effects of ageing.

If you haven’t already begun incorporating anti-aging treatments to your regime, we highly recommend you start doing so now to slow down the aging process. Your clinician will be able to customize a treatment, based on the needs of your skin. This may include a range of different Enzymes, Laser Facials, IPL or Laser treatments.

The great thing about active ingredients is that they are generally available in a variety of strengths. For example, if you chose low-level retinol for your late-20s, you can choose a stronger alternative to combat skin changes in your 30s.

Incorporating more restorative products is also recommended. These products tend to have a heavier consistency to combat reduced oil production. While they can be too heavy for younger skin types, they can be perfect for those who are experiencing a shift to drier skin in their 30s.

Choosing products with lipids and barrier-restoring ingredients can also assist to keep your skin nourished and hydrated, further preventing fine lines and wrinkles.

There are also a range of internal supplements that can help you to maintain healthy skin from the inside. These often include ingredients such as essential fatty acids and proteins to help restore and maintain the structure of your skin.

If you are noticing your skin is becoming less-firm, treatments such as LED and Laser Facials use heat to rebuild collagen and elastin. These treatments are great for creating plumper, more youthful-looking skin.

40-50s

During this time, you are likely to see more significant changes in your skin. To combat aging, a restorative skincare regime with stronger actives and regular clinical treatments is essential for maintaining the health and integrity of your skin.

For those experiencing pigmentation or sun damage, treatments such as Cosmelan can dramatically resurface the skin to provide a decrease in uneven skin tone.

Other treatments such as Photo-Rejuvenation Laser, Skin Needling and Advanced Enzyme Therapy can provide a targeted reduction in fine lines and wrinkles during this time.

60+

Once you reach your 60s, a similar approach can be taken: increasing active ingredient strength, opting more advanced treatments and ensuring lifestyle factors are conducive to healthy skin!

We recommend alternating between advanced light and laser treatments, Enzyme Therapy and LED to keep your skin firm, strong and healthy!
