What You Need to Know Before Your First Brazilian Wax

If you’re thinking about making your appointment for your first Brazilian wax, there’s no need to be nervous! When you choose the right beauty salon, you’ll be in safe hands and you can expect a quick, efficient treatment. However, if you’re not used to the Brazilian wax process, there are a few things you need to know.

When it comes to Brazilian waxing in Melbourne, we’ve had a lot of experience so we’re here to share what you need to know before you come along to your appointment.

Take the time to prep

Ideally, your hairs should be 6-10mm long when you go in for your wax. Resist the urge to shave too close to your appointment as this might mean that your treatment won’t be able to go ahead. If your hair is a bit too long, that can be easily fixed with a quick trim. You can also use a scrub a couple of days before the appointment to get rid of any dead skin cells.

Don’t use any moisturiser or perfume on the area prior to your treatment as this can stop the wax adhering properly. Most salons will also give you an antibacterial wipe so you can freshen up. If you’re worried that you’ll feel a little tender, you can also take a couple of painkillers 30-60 minutes prior to your appointment.

When to be cautious

If you’ve recently had IPL, it’s best to wait at least two weeks before having your wax and mention any recent treatments when you make your appointment so your salon can advise if this will be an issue. Remember that your appointment can always be rescheduled so don’t go along to your appointment if you’re experiencing any redness or irritation as waxing could exacerbate it.
Let your therapist know if you’re taking any medication, such as steroids or oral acne drugs, as this can impact on the treatment. Pregnant women are generally safe to proceed with waxing as long as you’re comfortable but check with your doctor before booking the appointment.

Immediately afterwards

Remember to wear loose fitting clothing which allows your skin to breathe after your appointment. Your skin might feel a little sensitive so it’s important to avoid abrasive scrubs, tanning products or other treatments for at least 48hrs to 72hrs. This also applies to any IPL you may be planning – make sure you give your skin a break. Until your skin has calmed down, steer clear of chlorinated pools, spas, saunas and very hot showers.

Once you’re confident that your skin is back to normal and there is no irritation, you can gently exfoliate to avoid ingrown hairs and apply a mild moisturiser. Most people find that they need to return for a wax every four to six weeks and it depends on how quickly your hair grows.
