Areas Treated With IPL & Laser Hair Reduction:

What is IPL Hair Reduction?

IPL is a non-invasive treatment that safely reduces the number of the re-growing hairs beneath the surface of the skin, and is suitable for all areas including facial hair reduction. Light pulses are used to damage hair follicles and impair their ability to grow hair. These damaged hair follicles are eliminated with excellent results for hair reduction, making IPL one of the most popular treatments for hair reduction.

How Does it Work?

The IPL hand-piece emits highly controlled pulses of light, which are selectively absorbed by the hair follicles lying just below the surface of the skin. The absorbed pulses of light heats the hair bulb, damaging the re-growth potential of the follicles – all without damaging the surrounding tissue. Using the principle of select photothermolysis, which is the same reason the sun warms you up in darker clothing more than lighter colours, IPL and Laser treatments will remove your unwanted hairs so you can bare your skin with confidence.

What Happens During a Treatment Session?

You can prepare for your treatment by shaving the treatment area before your appointment. At the salon, a cool gel is usually applied to the area to be treated and you will be given dark glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from the bright light. The pulses of light are applied to your skin to disable the hair follicles and their ability to re-grow hair. You may feel a slight stinging with each light pulse and most people tolerate the treatment well. The gel is removed, and any remaining hair in the treated area falls out over the next week or two.

The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient, depending on the extent of the procedure and the skin type. You may experience some slight pinkness or follicular swelling (hive-type reaction) at the treatment site – that usually subsides within a few hours. Cool compresses and aloe vera gel can be used to soothe the skin. True side effects are rare and, if they do occur, are typically minor.

Is IPL Hair Reduction Permanent?

While majority of unwanted hair can be destroyed after several IPL sessions, there may be a small percentage of hair that cannot be successfully treated such as light blonde and grey hairs that are lacking pigment. IPL hair reduction requires the hairs to be pigmented (light brown or darker) in order to be successful.

What's the Treatment Frequency?

A course of at least 4 to 8 treatments is recommended for optimal results, however some clients who suffer from excessive hair growth due to several factors may need more sessions.
In order to achieve successful results, hair needs to be treated at the active growth stage (anagen, or early anagen phase). While it may appear that all hairs are growing at once, they all march to the beat of their own drum and will grow at different frequencies to one another. Depending on the area, 10-20% may be in the growth phase at any one time. For this reason, treatments are generally performed at 4 to 10 weeks intervals, depending on the area that is being treated to target the percentage hairs that are in the growth phase at that time.

Treatment of Ingrown Hairs

Yes, IPL & Laser can treat ingrown hairs. As the IPL penetrates the skin, ingrown hairs can be eliminated. For those that just can’t avoid ingrown hairs as result of other hair reduction methods, IPL is the ultimate solution – no more irritation, painful lumps and bumps, or scarring.
